The Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MAPS) is comprised of eight departments that are highly rated for research excellence: Chemistry, Physics & Astronomy; Space & Climate Physics; Mathematics; Science & Technology Studies; Earth Sciences, Risk and Disaster Reduction and Statistical Science. In addition, the faculty has its own interdepartmental undergraduate degree programme: Natural Sciences. The faculty provides a base for a number of research centres and institutes: these facilities in-depth and interdisciplinary research through collaboration between experts within MAPS, and in related areas such as Engineering Sciences and Life Sciences. The Faculty prides itself on providing a rich and culturally diverse environment for students and staff alike.
The Chemistry Department at UCL is one of the top-ranked departments in the UK, with 100% of its outputs ranked as being world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) in REF2021. We are located in Bloomsbury, at the heart of London, and offer an exciting and vibrant environment in which to study in one the UK’s top universities. The department is committed to supporting excellence in both research and teaching and offers undergraduate BSc and MSci programmes in Chemistry and currently teaches 700 undergraduates registered in Chemistry as well as students who select Chemistry on the Natural Sciences programme and first year Chemistry for life scientists. The department also offers a number of Postgraduate Taught Masters courses with about 80 students per year and has a overall Postgraduate Research student school of about 250 students. The Chemistry Department has over 60 members of academic staff carrying out world-leading research.
The purpose of this role is to support the wellbeing of Chemistry students at Undergraduate and Postgraduate Taught level and enhance their experience by providing key pastoral and education support activities. This role will provide effective, professional guidance and signposting to students on a range of issues relating to welfare, health, and support academic progression.
The role holder will work with colleagues across the Department, Faculty, Student Support and Wellbeing Services (SSWS) teams beyond to help foster a culture of wellbeing, encouragement and inclusion within the department. This role does not directly itself provide specialist practitioner support or clinically qualified treatment.
Key Working Relationships
Departmental Tutor, Graduate Tutor, Teaching and Learning team, Year Leads, PG Supervisors, SSWS and Other Departmental Student Advisors, and Business Partner in Student Support and Welfare, Faculty Education team.
You will be a compassionate and approachable individual with a genuine commitment to supporting student wellbeing and enhancing the student experience. With strong interpersonal and communication skills, you will be confident in offering guidance and signposting on a range of welfare, health, and academic progression matters. You will work effectively with colleagues across departments and services to help create a supportive, inclusive, and encouraging environment. While not a specialist practitioner, you will demonstrate sound judgement, professionalism, and the ability to handle sensitive situations with care, ensuring students feel heard, supported, and empowered throughout their studies.
