The Finance Business Partnering (FBP) team supports policy and delivery colleagues across DESNZ to plan, manage and monitor budgets responsibly. As an Assistant Finance Business Partner (HEO), you will provide vital support, assistance, and analytical input to Finance Business Partners and business areas, helping them make sound financial decisions.

Your responsibilities will focus on supporting Finance Business Partners and business teams in delivering effective financial management. Typical activities include:
Supporting financial reporting and forecasting
• Assisting with the preparation of monthly financial forecasts, gathering data and checking accuracy.
• Supporting the production of in year financial reports by compiling information, preparing initial commentary and highlighting variances for review.
• Helping identify emerging financial risks and opportunities by contributing to early analysis.
Month end and core finance activities
• Supporting the month end process through preparing journals, helping with reconciliations and maintaining accurate coding.
• Assisting in maintaining high quality financial data and contributing to improvements in financial processes and controls.
Stakeholder and business support
• Helping budget holders understand their financial position by providing clear, accessible information.
• Assisting colleagues across policy, delivery and corporate functions to navigate finance procedures and requirements.
• Supporting communication of financial guidance, deadlines and expectations to business areas.
Policy and programme support
• Assisting with the preparation of financial inputs to business cases, ministerial submissions and policy proposals.
• Helping gather evidence and cost information to support financial assessments.
Continuous improvement and capability building
• Contributing to improvements in systems, templates and processes by sharing insights and feedback.
• Supporting financial capability activities, such as preparing materials or explaining processes to colleagues.
Essential Criteria
You will need to demonstrate:
• Experience supporting financial activities (e.g. forecasting, reporting, month end, data analysis or budget monitoring).
• Ability to communicate financial information clearly and explain it to non financial colleagues.
• Experience assisting stakeholders by gathering information, preparing analysis or explaining processes.
• Strong organisational skills and ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining accuracy.
• Good analytical, interpersonal and communication skills.
• Strong Excel and data manipulation skills.
Desirable criteria
• Familiarity with public sector finance frameworks (e.g., Managing Public Money).
• Interest in, or progress toward, CCAB qualifications.

Office attendance
The Department operates a discretionary hybrid working policy, which provides for a combination of working hours from your place of work and from your home in the UK. The current expectation for staff is to attend the office or non-home based location for 40-60% of the time over the accounting period.
As part of the application process you will be asked to complete an online test, CV, personal statement and behavioural statement. Further details around what this will entail are listed on the application form.
After submission of the first stage of your application you will be invited to complete a Civil Service Numerical Test and Civil Service Judgement Test. If you successfully pass the test, you will be invited to complete the final stage of the application.
Please complete the online tests as soon as possible (within 24-48 hours is recommended), the closing date for the tests is 23:55pm on 1st June 2026. If you fail to complete the online test before the deadline your application will be withdrawn. Guidance for the test will be available when you are invited to take the test. The tests are administered online and accessed via the CS Jobs website.
Test Maintenance
Our online test supplier will be performing scheduled maintenance between 4pm to midnight on 31st May 2026. You will be unable to access tests during this period.
If you are in the middle of a test when the maintenance begins, your progress will be paused. You will be able to resume your test from where you left off via your application centre once the downtime has ended. Please note that you will not be able to launch any new tests while the system is offline.
