You must be a student registered on a course at UWE Bristol for the 2026/27 academic year to be eligible for this opportunity.
We have an exciting opportunity for students who wish to join the UWE Bristol Student Life Team. The role of the Student Life Assistant is to provide support to students living within University Accommodation and in private rented accommodation, enabling them to feel a sense of belonging to the UWE Bristol community. Student Life Assistants will help UWE Bristol students understand their role and responsibilities to their community, enable students to positively contribute to student life and be supported to model healthy and inclusive behaviours.
Student Life Assistants bring UWE Bristol students together in an informal setting to provide a friendly and professional peer to peer support, helping to engage, be part of their community and help promote a sense of belonging amongst the student population. The postholders will encourage and enable all students to engage with events, linked projects and positive promotion of support services available to help them create strong connections with other students, The Students’ Union at UWE and the University.
It is an exciting time to be joining UWE Bristol: our recently launched Strategy 2030 sets out an ambitious programme of significant transformational projects to enhance the student experience.
About us:
Accommodation Services provide a home to over 5600 students living within our portfolio and in nominated City properties. This role will help deliver a high-quality service within a customer-focused environment which operates 24/7/365. The role is not limited to just those students living in university accommodation but also those living privately or at home, who also need to feel a sense of belonging to the UWE Bristol community.
The post has been developed in partnership with the Students’ Union at UWE to ensure that the student voice is heard, understood, and embedded across all areas of our work and the wider University.
Our dedicated team of staff provide support and signposting on a wide variety of emotional and practical issues, from issues living with others, behaviour management, homesickness, general wellbeing, connecting students to the support offered by the wider University.
In all our activities, we are driven by a culture of continuous improvement, implementing enhancements to our service delivery to support an exceptional staff and student experience.
About you
You will be passionate about UWE and being part of the UWE community. We are looking for motivated and proactive applicants with previous experience of providing customer services, effective communication, knowledge of issues facing students and a knowledge of the support services available to students. We would also like to hear from applicants with previous experience or involvement in activities aimed at enriching student life as this will be a great addition to the team. This post requires basic DBS clearance.
Interviews are planned to take place the first week of June, with Teams interviews considered in special circumstances, contract start dates will be the 1st of August. There will be mandatory in person training during August – shifts will begin from the 7th of September.
There are 4 positions available. Each postholder will work an average of 8 – 12 hours per week (480 hours over 40 weeks) as part of a rota which runs over 7 days. Hours will vary depending on activities on site and time of year. A typical shift pattern may be Mon, Tues, and Sat plus 1 daytime shift allowing the postholder the flexibility of choosing this shift around lectures. However, work will typically take place on evenings between 17:00 – 21:00 as part of a rota including one weekend day.
Due to the nature of the role flexibility will be required to support large scale events which may run earlier during the day. Local restrictions around leave will apply, typically around the main arrival and departure times. The postholders will be expected to take part in a rota of cover during the Winter and Spring holiday/university closure periods, for which additional payment will be made. The postholder may be required to attend individual/group training outside of working hours, prior notice will be given.
The postholder will be expected to attend (in person) Team meetings once a month, to help build a positive team spirit and to provide valuable feedback on past events and suggestions for new. The Postholder will be required to lead events and be the point of contact for the shift – so confidence, ownership, organisation and attention to detail is essential. The Postholder will also be required periodically to take part in photo shoots and videos to help promote our brand, activities, and events.
The postholder will be expected to be based predominantly at our Frenchay Campus in Bristol, however, the team will work across all campuses, including Glenside, Hollies and City Centre residential buildings so travel between sites will be required.
The University’s normal practice is that new appointments will be made at the starting point of the grade.
