Job Description:
Healthcare Assistant experience is essential (Care Certificate) with a willingness to train for a Phlebotomy role (if not already) in order to share tasks. Its a fantastic role at the heart of our healthcare provision and can expand as your ambition dictates. Patients love a good HCA and so do we!
Good computer skills are important and knowledge of EMIS Web, Docman and ICE would be an added advantage but not essential.

Job Summary:
Working under the direct supervision of the Nurse Clinical Lead GP Partner and the Practice Nurse and in strict accordance with specific Practice guidelines and protocols, the Healthcare Assistant will assist the Practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribed programmes of patient care.
Duties and Responsibilities
Undertake, record and follow guidelines for clinical tasks (for which you will have received appropriate training) such as New Patient health checks, assist in the monitoring of Long Term Conditions and perform other routine reviews of patients.
Specific tasks you will perform (after appropriate training) may include but not be limited to:
1. Blood pressure
2. Pulse rate and rhythm
3. Oximetry
4. Spirometry
5. Temperature
6. Height and weight – body mass index
7. Visual acuity
8. Venepuncture
9. ECG
Liaison and Relationships
Maintain effective liaison with other agencies and staff concerned with patient care and with all other disciplines within the practice, with appropriate regard to confidentiality
Maintain good communication and relationships with patients, carers, employers and colleagues within and without the practice and to represent the practice well.
Personal /Professional Development:
The post holder will participate in any training programme implemented by the Practice as part of this employment, such training to include:
Participation in an annual individual performance review, including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or professional development
Hours of work
37.5 hours per week (worked between the hours of 8.00 am to 7.00 pm, Mon-Fri and opportunity to work One Saturday a month as overtime), worked to a plan as agreed.
There may be a requirement to work weekends, Bank holidays or any times outside the above hours in the future.
Holiday Leave Entitlement
The post attracts 5.2 weeks (pro rata) of your normal working week, plus bank and statutory holidays. The holiday year runs from April to March, and your holiday entitlement in the remaining leave year will be calculated once your start date is confirmed. Annual leave entitlement is calculated in hours.
Probationary period
There will be a probationary period of 3 months. You will have formal reviews of your performance at 6 weeks and 3 months and subject to satisfaction your contract will become permanent. The start of the probationary period will then be considered to be the start of your employment.

In the course of seeking treatment, patients entrust us with, or allow us to gather, sensitive information in relation to their health and other matters. They do so in confidence and have the right to expect that staff will respect their privacy and act appropriately.
In the performance of duties outlined in this Job Description, the post-holder may have access to confidential information relating to patients and their carers, Practice staff and other healthcare workers. They may also have access to information relating to the Practice as a business organisation. All such information from any source is to be regarded as strictly confidential.
Information relating to patients, carers, colleagues, other healthcare workers or the business of the Practice may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the Practice policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data.
Health & Safety
The post holder will assist in promoting and maintaining their own and others’ health, safety and security as defined in the Practice Health & Safety Policy, to include:
Using personal security systems within the workplace according to Practice guidelines
Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a away that manage those risks
1. Hand washing procedures
2. Universal hygiene procedures
3. Collection and handling of laboratory specimens
4. Segregation and disposal of waste materials
5. Decontamination of instruments and clinical equipment
6. Reporting and treatment of sharps injuries
7. Dealing with blood and body fluid spillages
8. Assist patients and colleagues in adopting sound infection control measures
Understand and apply principles of cold chain
Ensure safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs within area of responsibility
Be aware of the general principles of first aid and resuscitation and to be able to undertake initial actions as appropriate
Be aware of statutory child health procedures and statutory local guidance and referral criteria
Know the health and safety policies and procedures within the workplace, including fire procedures, maintaining documentation, monitoring and maintaining equipment and furniture within your area of responsibility
Use computer monitor safely
Be able to identify the risks to health of microbiology and chemical hazards within the working environment according to the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health

The post-holder will:

Deal with requests from patients and clinical staff for health information leaflets

Record information and activities undertaken with patients and carers in an accurate and timely fashion using the computer systems where appropriate
Maintain confidentiality or information relating to patients, relatives, staff and the practice
Take the necessary precautions when transmitting information
