Summary
The post holder is responsible for contributing to the optimum delivery of care by assisting all clinical staff and to deliver care in a manner sensitive to the individuals patients needs, acknowledging and respecting their needs, acknowledging and respecting patient rights and beliefs at all times.
Primary responsibilities
The following are the core responsibilities of the a Health Care Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks. This will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:
Work alongside the clinicians effectively in provision of care
Undertake and record the following tasks:
Measurement of height and weight, smoking status and other health parameters
Urinalysis
Measurement of temperature and blood pressure (BP)
24 hour ambulatory BP monitoring
Follow up BP monitoring
Recording of ECG’s
Respiratory measurements
NHS health checks and well person checks
Venepuncture including processing and management of laboratory samples requested by members of the clinical team
Provide influenza, pneumococcal and hydroxocobalamin injections in line with practice procedure, under PSD
Participate and take part in and develop services for patients on warfarin and undertake INR home visits for housebound patients
Preparing and maintaining environments and equirement before, during and after patient care interventions including assisting clinicians during performance of specialist services
Undertake foot checks for patients with diabetes
Delivery of clinical achievements associated with QoF targets and quality contract
Help to raise awareness of health and welllbeing with patients and how it can be promoted provided relevant health promotion literature where appropriate
Maintain standards of infection control and participate in regular audits
Assist clinicians in emergency management of patients and ensure maintenance of all such emergency equipment.
Respond to all queries for and requests for assistance from patients and other visitors
Ensure surgical equipment and vaccines are restocked with appropriate stock rotation.
To record the temperature of vaccine fridges, vaccine cold chain on a daily basis and report problems and appropriately stock clinical rooms in line with requirements.
Participate in the clinical waste and sharps procedures and ensuring waste collection run smoothly, reporting any problems to the Practice Management Team.
To undertake audits against national standards on a range of topics.
To record and store concise, legible and accurate data, maintaining its confidentiality at all times.
To act in such a way as to promote the safety and wellbeing of patients and staff by being aware the Practice policies which relate to Health and Safety, Fire precautions, untoward incidents etc.
To carry out such additional tasks as delegated by the lead GP and which have been taught, subsequently supervised and in which the worker has proved competent. This in time will include venepuncture.
To undertake specific projects as and when required by the Practice.
Generic responsibilities
All staff at the Lane Ends Surgery have a duty to confirm to the following:
Assist the practice in the ongoing development and implementation of the NHS national policy and Practice IT strategy.
Audit data collection standards in the practice and interrogate data for audit purposes.
Attend Emis and associated IT update sessions and meetings to ensure the practice team is appropriately updated with changes and best practice.
Other duties that may be required from time to time.
All staff are expected to adhere to practice policies and procedures at all times.
To understand and comply with Practice safeguarding procedure, undertake and support the policy and maintain relevant training standards required.
Support the management team in delivering requirements for Health and Safety standards.
