The Health and Education Support Worker Programme is a jointly funded initiative between Cardiff & Vale University Health Board and Local Authority Education partners. The service provides 1:1 clinical support that enables children and young people with tracheostomies or other complex health needs to safely access nursery and school settings.
As a Health and Education Support Worker, you will play a key role in ensuring that children can attend their educational placements safely. Working in schools and early years settings, you will support children’s participation in learning, play and social activities while delivering clinical tasks such as tracheostomy care, suctioning, airway management and emergency responses. You will work closely with families, teachers, nursery staff, community nurses and wider professionals to provide high‑quality, child‑centred care. Full training and competency‑based assessment will be provided.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
The role is term‑time‑only, with salary paid pro‑rata to reflect the weeks worked. Full‑time and part‑time hours can be considered depending on the needs of the children. You will be part of a small and dedicated team, providing support on a strict 1:1 basis to ensure safe, consistent and personalised care. The programme is committed to providing compassionate, inclusive support that enables children with health needs to attend school, make progress and take part fully in their education.
This role provides 1:1 specialist clinical support for a child/young person with a tracheostomy or other complex health needs in their nursery or school setting. Duties include tracheostomy care, suctioning, tube changes, airway management, enteral feeding, monitoring the child’s condition, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring a safe environment in line with clinical protocols and training.
In addition, the role supports the learner’s access to education, personal care, safety, inclusion and daily activities, working closely with teachers, families and healthcare professionals. You will implement individual programmes, support the child’s engagement and independence, and contribute to communication with parents and staff. Ongoing training, competency assessment and adherence to UHB and school safeguarding policies are required.
It may be necessary to move between sites during the day and successful candidates would need to be able to do this in a timely way.
