Alexander James Contracts is an award-winning main contractor delivering high-quality construction projects across London and the Home Counties. We work across residential, education, healthcare, commercial, and refurbishment sectors, delivering projects with a strong focus on quality, collaboration, and long-term relationships.

As our projects and supply chain continue to grow, we are looking for a proactive and commercially minded Buyer to join our team at Alexander House in Uxbridge.

The Role

The Buyer will play a key role in supporting our live construction projects by sourcing and procuring materials, plant, and subcontract services in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Working closely with site teams, Quantity Surveyors, Contracts Managers, and suppliers, you will help ensure projects are well-supported with the right products, at the right price, delivered at the right time.

This is a fast-paced and varied role suited to someone who is organised, commercially aware, and confident building strong relationships across the supply chain.

Key Responsibilities

• Procure construction materials, plant, and associated products for live projects
• Source competitive quotations and negotiate best value with suppliers
• Build and maintain strong working relationships with existing and new supply chain partners
• Coordinate deliveries to ensure materials arrive on time and in line with project requirements
• Work closely with site teams and commercial teams to understand procurement needs
• Monitor market pricing, lead times, and supplier performance
• Assist in managing supplier accounts and resolving any supply or delivery issues
• Help maintain accurate procurement records and documentation
• Support cost-saving initiatives and continuous improvement across purchasing processes
• Ensure procurement activities align with company procedures and project programmes

What We’re Looking For

• Previous experience in a buying or procurement role within construction
• Strong organisational and communication skills
• Good commercial awareness and attention to detail
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
• Confident negotiating and building relationships with suppliers
• Proactive and solution-focused approach
• Ability to prioritise workload and manage multiple tasks
• Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office
• A team player with a positive and professional attitude

Desirable

• Understanding of construction materials and supply chains
• Experience working with subcontractors and suppliers
• Knowledge of procurement systems or construction software
• Full UK driving licence
